Chapter 11

The blue blanket

It was time again to explore Australia’s natural wonders. And if you find yourself in Sydney, the Blue Mountains are an obvious choice. The name "Blue Mountains" supposedly comes from the blue mist that rises when the oil in eucalyptus leaves evaporates, creating a blue blanket. With that in mind, we hopped on a train heading for the Blue Mountains, and two hours later, the whole train went out at Katoomba. But we decided to go four stops further and got off in Blackheath.

After some deliberation, we decided to go with the Burramoko Ridge (Hanging Rock) Trail, an 11.3 km hike. According to AllTrails, the hike itself can feel a bit monotonous, maybe even dull. But they promised the view at the end would be absolutely spectacular – and we couldn’t agree more. What an atmosphere. What a peace. What a breathtaking view over the Blue Mountains. Bonus: we had the whole stunning scene to ourselves. Definitely a highlight.
