Chapter 12
Edge of the World?
My parents had invited us along for a trip on the Great Ocean Road, a journey we’d been looking forward to. We were picked up in a white minibus. Jaimes, our trusty guide, driver, DJ, and self-appointed entertainer, did an amazing job. He kicked things off by playing Down Under by Men at Work, which set the perfect mood.
We spotted two koalas, countless tree ferns in Maits Rest Rainforest, Gibson Steps Beach, and of course, the iconic Twelve Apostles. You’d think there would be twelve limestone stacks, but there are actually only seven left – the rest have been claimed by the relentless waves. Watching the ocean kiss these massive rocks, it really felt like standing at the end of the world. The next landmass is the world’s largest desert, Antarctica.
This trip also meant it was nearly time to say goodbye to my parents. The last few days in Melbourne were filled with cozy times, relaxing, playing pass the pigs, and enjoying great beer. Saying goodbye was tough. It’s something I’ll probably never be good at. We’re so grateful for the wonderful memories we created together. Thank you so much for visiting, Mom and Dad. You’re the best. We can’t wait to see you again.
