Chapter 16
Coral paradise
December was a little different this year. ‘Æbleskvier’, gloves, and 'Last Christmas' were replaced with mangoes, swimwear, and cicadas. My birthday was celebrated at the southernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliot Island. A true coral gem.
The only way to visit the island is by a small plane. That alone is pretty cool. Upon arrival, you're given a snorkel set, and then it's just time to go all in. Our dream of experiencing the coral reef and swimming with sea turtles became a reality. The island is home to 3 different species: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead turtles. During November and December, they crawl up on the beach to lay eggs. We were eager to witness this, so the alarm was set for 4:30. Our tired bodies were rewarded, and we got to see a sea turtle dig a nest. Wow.
